Oil extraction: producing high-quality and fresh chia seed oil
The chia seeds can be mechanically extracted in a cold or hot pressing process.
The obtained chia seed oil has a light yellow color, smells neutral during cold pressing and gets increasingly nutty accents during hot pressing. It is rich in α-linolenic acid and also contains linoleic acid, saturated fatty acids such as stearic acid and palmitic acid, and monounsaturated fatty acids (including oleic acid). Vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are also contained in this oil. Both the characteristics and the processing process is similar for chia seed and linseed.
In addition to its use as a food, the oil is also used in the production of paints, where it is valued for its antioxidants (UV and yellowing protection) and transparency.
The press cake is mainly used as animal feed.
