Sunflower seeds dehulled by Florapower

Sunflower are an important source of high-quality sunflower oil!

It is fascinating to see how such a valuable product is created from the small kernels. The process of extracting the oil is not only interesting, but also sustainable, as the remains of the seeds can be reused.

This is how oil extraction succeeds!

To obtain the oil, the ripe sunflower seeds are first completely or partially shelled, pre-heated and then mechanically pressed. The oil is pressed using a cold or hot pressing process with a screw press. Another method of de-oiling sunflower is extraction. If necessary, the oil is refined to remove unwanted components.

Oil obtained by cold pressing is light yellow, while hot-pressed oil has a reddish-yellow color. Extracted and refined oil is light yellow and clear.

Both hot-pressed and cold-pressed sunflower oil are almost odorless. They smell slightly aromatic, greasy, nutty and woody and have a roasted or green note. Sunflower oil has a pleasant, mild taste.

Sunflower oil has a shelf life of approx. 9 to a maximum of 12 months if stored in a cool and light-protected place after production.

Use

Sunflower oil: has a positive effect in pharmacy and medicine

In the pharmaceutical industry, sunflower seed oil is used as a filling material in soft gelatin capsules. In addition, it is used in the production of creams and ointments, and can replace olive oil and peanut oil in medical products. According to the book Oils – Naturally Cold-Pressed by Marcus Hartmann, sunflower seed oil is supposed to be easily digestible and help in reducing high cholesterol.

Sunflower oil: Versatile in the industry

Sunflower oil is used industrially for oil and artists’ paints and for the production of soaps and varnishes. It can also be used as a preservative in cloth manufacturing and leather processing. Hot-pressed oil can only be used for industrial purposes.

As a biofuel, pure sunflower oil can also be used as a vegetable oil fuel. However, little research has been carried out into its fuel qualities. In contrast, sunflower oil is now often used to produce biodiesel. Refined oil is also found in lubricating oil and plasticizers.

Sunflower oil: the secret weapon for your kitchen!

Sunflower oil is considered a valuable cooking oil as it can be used in many different ways. It is used as a cooking oil, can be used as a dietary food and is also suitable for use in baby food and in the production of mayonnaise, salad dressings and margarine. However, only sunflower oils from “high oleic” varieties should be heated to high temperatures, as other types of sunflower oil can form carcinogenic substances (radicals). The latter should only be used for cold dishes. They can only be heated up to a maximum of 120° C, but contain a very high proportion of omega-6 fatty acids, a low proportion of saturated fatty acids and a lot of vitamin E.

Sunflower oil is traditionally used internally for constipation and externally for poorly healing wounds, skin lesions and rheumatism. The pressing residues and the defatted flour are also used. They can be used as animal feed.
